Citrus season
It’s full-on citrus season now, both at the grocery store and my basement. Denny’s Meyer lemon tree has some lovely fruit on it, some of which I used to make that delicious lemon pudding cake from last season.
What you see below is a grocery store acquisition, an orange that looked regular on the outside but on the inside looks more like a pink grapefruit. It tastes pretty much like an orange, though. It was good.
ok so I’ve been pondering your meyer lemon tree for a year now. I’m having a hard time figuring out how it grows so well in Iowa. Does it not have to be outside to bear fruit or do you put it out in the summer? See, these questions have been building up for months now 🙂
Yes, we put it outside in the summer (I use the word “we” very generously here because Denny does everything related to the tree except use the lemons), either actually outside or on our screened-in porch. In the winter we put it down in the basement right next to a big window.
I remember Denny saying when he bought it that he had the choice between a very small tree and a more established one, and he bought the more established one. I think that helped it get started better. Last year (the first year we had it) we got 3 nice lemons, and this year I think we’ll have 6-8.
That orange is kinda like a blood orange but not nearly red enough (at least on my monitor).
