I found a great website
Check out Uncommon Goods. They have fabulous stuff–gorgeous vases, lamps, glassware. I particularly like this mug and these garden lamps. They have lots of other rad things, too, and many of them are reasonably priced.
What am I reading right now? you ask. Well, I’m about halfway through Carrie Fisher’s Postcards from the Edge. It’s merely OK. I’m finding all that 80’s excess stuff a little boring, such as Jay McInerney’s Bright Lights, Big City, which is actually a much better book than Postcards…, but similar genre. You can only read about self-absorbed people doing cocaine for so long. What shall I read next? I think I’ll pick up the new Harry Potter for light honeymoon reading (it’s being released a couple of weeks before the wedding), but I’m always up for further suggestions. Fiction-wise, I prefer character-driven, witty, cerebral stuff–like Tom Robbins or Eudora Welty.
What’s the last really good book you read?
“The Fourth Hand” by John Irving. I love all John Irving’s books, but my favorite of this author, and actually my favorite novel of all time, is “A Prayer for Owen Meaney.” Other great books by this author include “The World According to Garp,” “The Cider House Rules,” and “Hotel New Hampshire.” All are great summer reads.
I just finished reading “A Very Long Engagement” and thought it was good, but didn’t quite deliver in the end. I am in the middle of “Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell” and find it delightful, if a bit plodding (but only a bit).
Our last two book club books have been great–“The Kite Runner” by Khaled Hosseini (not light, but excellent reading) and “Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time” by Mark Haddon (a quick, intriguing read).
Einstein’s Dreams by Alan Lightman
